Adventures in Togo

I was in Togo a mere two weeks, but so many adventures welcomed me back to Africa.  There wasn't just one adventure.  I have several to share.

1. Double Déjà Vu -- It was an adventure to even get out of Ohio with my passport and two visas.  And, it wasn't the first time.

2. People Along My Path - Jean Koumy -- For this project, with the US Embassy in Togo, I created a mural with a Togolese artist, his four assistants, local high school students, and even Peace Corps Volunteers.

3. Second Thoughts, a Little Too Late -- There are times when I wish my second thoughts were my first thoughts.  This is certainly one of those times, when I met my first witch doctor.

4. The House of Slaves -- Okay, it isn't one of the happiest places I've ever visited, but it is one of the most important.  This house of slave traders wasn't closed down until 1857, fifty years after slavery was banned by Great Britain.

5. Mural 63 in 27 Countries, Lomé, Togo -- It's my first mural project with a US Embassy since the arrival of that nasty little virus shut everything down.  It was so very overdue.

6. There's No Place Like Lomé -- On my second week in Togo, I moved from my luxury hotel to something more like a Peace Corps haven.  My standards are not as high as other people have.  I need safe, relatively clean, and let me repeat, safe.  And, I was in a much more African environment.  I loved it.

7. Beyond the Gate -- There are times where I've wandered where maybe it wasn't the wisest place to go.  So far, it hasn't exploded in my face.  One more time, this time in Lomé, I wandered beyond the gate, and it was just wonderful.
