Activities about Togo

1. ART .... My mural in Togo was created with local Togolese artist Jean Koumy. His style of art is very bright and colorful with bold patterns.  Scroll through his Facebook page or do a Google Image search.  Students can create their own work, inspired by the images from Koumy.  This would work with pastels, crayons, markers, water colors, or colored pencils.  Just as an artist's tip, I would recommend doing the black outlines last.

2. HEALTH and NUTRITION .... Any study on any subject is better with food.  There are many sources that include Togolese cuisine including Lacademie, Spice Breeze, Med Munch, Chef's Pencil, International Cuisine, 196 Flavors, and even the Peace Corps.  If you can't find a recipe here, then you can't cook -- sort of like me.

3. ART .... West African Art: Liberia and Sierra Leone from Art History Teaching Resources includes history, background, masks, clothing and suggested reading.

4. ART .... African Mask Design with Phillip Martin or with Arty Factory.com

5. HISTORY .... This lesson by the Humane Society introduces students to the ivory trade in Africa.

6. HISTORY .... Learning for Justice has lessons about slavery for students of all ages.  Other resources include ISTE and Home School Mom.

7. HISTORY .... If you are going to discuss slavery, it is also good to learn about one of the men most responsible for ending it, William Wilberforce.  My Learning and Development Education provide a good supply of teaching resources.

8. MUSIC .... While working on an art project, play music from Togo.  Many videos are available on YouTube including Gbessi Zolawadji, Traditional Togolese Music and Dance, Yaya Leley, Agbadza, Alognon Degbevi, Gbessi, King Mensah, The Very Best of Africa Music, and The Best of Togolese Worship.  (The last two are both over an hour long.)
