SANTA MARIA de FE ......... The town was founded in 1647 by Jesuit missionaries from Belgium. They came to minister to the indigenous Guaraní people. As you see in the hand of the missionary, they showed up with statues of Catholic saints. The missionaries taught the very talented Guaraní people to carve their own statues, which can be seen in the museum.

The most famous statue carved by the Guaraní artists , now in the church, gave the town its name. So, it should come as no surprise that it is Santa Maria de Fe (Holy Mary of Faith).
