Recipes from Namibia

White corn meal flour (which I've never seen outside of southern Africa) is used for many meals in the region. And if you want meat, you have to learn how to "braai". (Don't worry if you don't know that word, it's Afrikaans for barbeque. You learn it very quickly when you make Namibian friends.)

If you are like me and don't cook much, a much easier option is Spiced Orange Tea.

Spiced Orange Tea
Windhoek, Namibia

4 cups boiling water
1/3 cup sugar
10 whole cloves
2 cinnamon sticks
4 tea bags
1 orange zest and juice
2 Tablespoons lemon juice
1 lemon sliced

In a saucepan, combine boiling water, sugar, cloves and cinnamon sticks.

Bring the solution to a boil. Add teabags, remove from heat, and allow to steep for four minutes.

Add orange juice, zest, lemon juice and lemon slices. Reheat but do not boil. Finally, strain the solution and serve in warmed glasses.
